The thyroid gland regulates the body’s metabolism. A thyroid mass is either benign or malignant, that’s why a biopsy is needed. If the growth is benign and it does not interfere with the patient’s life or aesthetic sense, the mass may be left alone. However, if it is malignant or causes significant symptoms like difficulty swallowing or is not aesthetically acceptable to the patient, the mass, a portion or all of the thyroid gland may be removed, depending on the case.
